IELTS Academic or General Training: which one do you need?

By Saurabh Thakulla · Published

Every year, students book the wrong IELTS module and have to sit the test again. The two versions look similar, but they are not interchangeable. Here’s how to choose.

The short answer

  • Going abroad to study at a university or college? You almost certainly need IELTS Academic.
  • Going abroad to work, for training, or for migration? You probably need IELTS General Training.

But the only rule that really matters: take the module your university, employer or visa route asks for. Check their website or ask them in writing before you book.

What is the same

Listening and Speaking are identical in both modules: the same recordings, the same questions, the same examiners.

What is different

Reading

AcademicGeneral Training
TextsLong passages from books, journals and newspapersEveryday texts: notices, adverts, workplace documents, plus one longer text
Questions40 in 60 minutes40 in 60 minutes
ScoringSame 0–9 band scale, but a different conversion from raw score

Because the General Training texts are easier, you need more correct answers in General Training to get the same band as in Academic.

Writing

AcademicGeneral Training
Task 1Describe a graph, chart, table, map or process (150 words)Write a letter: formal, semi-formal or informal (150 words)
Task 2An essay on a general topic (250 words)An essay on a general topic (250 words)

Task 2 is similar in both. The big difference is Task 1: describing data versus writing a letter.

Choosing based on your plans

Choose Academic if you’re applying for a bachelor’s or master’s degree, a diploma at a college, or a professional registration that asks for Academic (some nursing and medical bodies do).

Choose General Training if you’re applying for skilled work, a work-and-holiday programme, or permanent residence where General Training is accepted.

Not sure? If you might study and migrate later, Academic is often accepted for both. But “often” isn’t “always”: check each requirement.

How preparation differs

If you’re taking Academic, put extra time into:

  • Describing graphs and processes with accurate data language (rose sharply, peaked at, accounted for).
  • Reading long, dense passages quickly.

If you’re taking General Training, focus on:

  • Letter tone: a complaint to a company sounds different from a note to a friend.
  • Scanning short practical texts for specific information.

For both, Writing Task 2 carries the most weight in your writing score, so practise essays every week.

Don’t forget the test type

Separate from the module, some visa routes, particularly for the UK, need IELTS for UKVI, which is the same test taken at approved centres. Check whether your route needs it before booking.

When you set up Prepyo, you choose Academic or General Training, and your reading and writing practice follows that module’s tasks. Listening and speaking practice is shared, just like the real test. Learn more on the IELTS preparation page, or compare tests in PTE vs IELTS for Nepali students.

Frequently asked questions

The reading texts in General Training are more everyday, and Writing Task 1 is a letter instead of a graph. Many students find it more familiar, but you must still take the module your university, employer or visa asks for.
