PTE vs IELTS for Nepali students: which should you take?

By Saurabh Thakulla · Published

Both PTE Academic and IELTS Academic will get you into most universities abroad. The right choice depends less on which test is “easier” and more on how you work under pressure, how soon you need a result, and what your university or visa route accepts.

Here is the short version for students in Nepal, followed by the details.

How each test feels on the day

PTE Academic happens entirely on a computer. You speak into a headset, type your writing, and click through reading and listening tasks. Many tasks are integrated: Read Aloud counts towards both reading and speaking, and Write from Dictation counts towards both listening and writing. That means one weak skill can pull down more than one score.

IELTS Academic splits into four separate sections: Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes, two tasks) and Speaking (11–14 minutes with a real examiner). Each skill is scored on its own, and Writing Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1.

Choose PTE if…

  • You are comfortable typing and speaking to a computer rather than a person.
  • You need your result quickly, because an application deadline is close.
  • You get nervous in face-to-face conversations. There is no examiner in the room.
  • You can speak clearly and steadily. PTE rewards fluency and pronunciation in almost every speaking task.

Choose IELTS if…

  • You speak better in conversation than into a microphone.
  • Your university or scholarship specifically asks for IELTS.
  • You prefer to handle one skill at a time rather than integrated tasks.
  • You are confident in academic essay writing, which IELTS marks on four published criteria.

What it costs from Nepal

As of October 2026, PTE Academic costs USD 220 plus 13% VAT, which is about USD 248.60, or roughly NPR 32,000–33,000 depending on the exchange rate. IELTS Academic costs NPR 36,000 at both the British Council and IDP, and IELTS for UKVI costs NPR 36,400.

Fees change several times a year. Always confirm the price on the official Pearson, British Council or IDP booking page before you pay.

Where you can take each test

  • PTE: Pearson runs centres in Kathmandu and several other cities. Pearson’s booking site shows every centre and its open dates.
  • IELTS: the British Council and IDP run tests in Kathmandu, with locations in Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar and other cities.

A simple way to decide

Take a short diagnostic in both formats before you book. If your speaking score holds up when you talk to a computer, PTE’s speed and convenience usually win. If you freeze without a person in front of you, IELTS will show your real level better.

On Prepyo you can practise both PTE and IELTS from one account and switch between them any time, so you can try each format before spending NPR 32,000 or more on the real thing.

Frequently asked questions

Neither is easier. PTE is computer-based and scored by AI with human oversight; IELTS has a face-to-face speaking test with an examiner. Most students find one format suits them better, and that is the one to choose.
